Diaz: Carl Edwards makes right call sticking with Roush

And so the drama is over.

Carl Edwards has reportedly decided to stay with Roush Fenway Racing.

Good for him. It was the best move possible.

Edwards is the current points leader and is positioned to be the guy who finally wrestles the title of NASCAR champ from Jimmie Johnson after a five-year run.

Bolting to Joe Gibbs Racing _ as many insiders were speculating he would do _ simply would have imploded Carl’s chance of winning a championship.

Given the dynamics, it would have been a messy breakup.

Edwards’ decision leaves Clint Bowyer as the No. 1 free agent on the market, but he appears close to re-signing with Richard Childress Racing. “I hope we have it done in a couple of days,” he said. “We’re getting close.” Asked if he was looking elsewhere, Bowyer said: “No, we are getting close to having a deal put together.”
